CHIMES OF FREEDOM

Bob Dylan

Far [G] between sundown's [C] finish, And [G] midnight's broken [C] toll
We [G] ducked inside the [D7] doorway, Thunder [G] crashing [C][G]
As [G] majestic bells of [C] bolts Struck [G] shadows in the [C] sounds
[G] Seeming to be The [C] chimes of [D7] freedom [G] flashing [C][G]
[D7] Flashing for the [G] warriors Whose [C] strength is not to [G] fight
[C] Flashing for the [G] refugees On the [Am] unarmed road of [D7] flight
And for [G] each and every [C] underdog [G] Soldier in the [C] night
And we [G] gazed upon The [D7] chimes of freedom [G] flashing. [C][G]

Through the [G] city's melted [C] furnace, Unex-[G]-pectedly we [C]watched
With [G] faces hidden [D7] As the walls were [G] tightening [C][G]
As the [G] echo of the [C] wedding bells [G] Before the blowing [C] rain
[G] Dissolved into the [C] bells [D7] of the [G] lightning [C][G]
[D7] Tolling for the [G] rebel, [C] tolling for the [G] rake
[C] Tolling for the [G] luckless, the [Am] abandoned and [D7] forsaked
[G] Tolling for the [C] outcast, burning [G] constantly at [C] stake
And we [G] gazed upon the [D7] chimes of freedom [G] flashing. [C][G]

Through the [G] mad mystic [C] hammering of the [G] wild ripping [C] hail
The [G] sky cracked its [D7] poems in naked [G] wonder [C][G]
That the [G] clinging of the [C] church bells blew [G] far into the [C] breeze
Leaving [G] only bells of [C] lightning [D7] and its [G] thunder [C][G]
[D7] Striking for the [G] gentle, [C] striking for the [G] kind
[C] Striking for the [G] guardians and [Am] protectors of the [D7] mind
And for the [G] poet and the [C] painter far [G] behind his rightful [C] time
And we [G] gazed upon the [D7] chimes of freedom [G] flashing. [C][G]

Through the [G] wild cathedral [C] evening the [G] rain unravelled [C] tales
For the [G] disrobed faceless [D7] forms of no [G] position [C][G]
[G] Tolling for the [C] tongues with no [G] place to bring their [C] thoughts
All [G] down in taken for [C] granted [D7] situ-[G]-ations [C][G]
[D7] Tolling for the [G] deaf an' blind, [C] tolling for the [G] mute
For the [C] mistreated, mateless [G] mother, the mis-[C]-titled prosti-[G]-tute
For the [G] misdemeanor [C] outlaw, chained and [G] cheated by [C] pursuit
And we [G] gazed upon the [D7] chimes of freedom [G] flashing. [C][G]

Even [G] though a cloud's white [C] curtain in a [G] far-off corner [C] flared
An' the [G] hypnotic splattered [D7] mist was slowly [G] lifting [C][G]
[G] Electric light still [C] struck like arrows, [G] fired but for the [C] ones
[G] Condemned to drift or [C] else be [D7] kept from [G] drifting [C][G]
[D7] Tolling for the [G] searching ones, on their [C] speechless, seeking [G] trail
For the [C] lonesome-hearted [G] lovers with too [C] personal a [G] tale
And for [G] each unharmful, [C] gentle soul [G] misplaced inside a [C] jail
And we [G] gazed upon the [D7] chimes of freedom [G] flashing. [C][G]

[C] Starry-eyed and [C] laughing as I [G] recall when we [C] were caught
[G] Trapped by no track of [D7] hours for they hanged [G] suspended [C][G]
As we [G] listened one last [C] time and we [G] watched with one last [C] look [G] [G] Spellbound and swallowed [C] 'til the [D7] tolling [G] ended [C][G]
[D7] Tolling for the [G] aching ones, whose [C] wounds cannot be [G] nursed
For the [C] countless confused, [G] accused, misused,
[C] strung-out ones and [G] worse
And for [G] every hung-up [C] person in the [G] whole wide uni-[C]-verse
And we [G] gazed upon the [D7] chimes of freedom [G] flashing. [C][G]
