 HIGHLANDS

Bob Dylan

[E7] Well my heart's in The Highlands, gentle and fair

Honeysuckle blooming in the wildwood air

[A] Bluebells blazing where the Aberdeen waters [E7] flow

Well my [B7] heart's in The Highlands

[A] I'm gonna go there when I feel good enough to [E7] go

[E7] Windows were shaking all night in my dreams

Everything was exactly the way that it seems

[A] Woke up this mornin' and I looked at the same old [E7] page

[B7] Same old rat race, [A] life in the same old [E7] cage

[E7] I don't want nothin' from anyone, ain't that much to take

Wouldn't know the difference between a real blonde and a fake

[A] Feel like a prisoner in a world of myste-[E7]-ry

I wish [B7] someone'd come and [A] push back the clock for [E7] me

[E7] Well my heart's in The Highlands wherever I roam

That's where I'll be when I get called home

The [A] wind it whispers to the buckeye trees of [E7] rhyme

Well my [B7] heart's in The Highlands

[A] I can only get there one step at a [E7] time

[E7] I'm listening to Neil Young, I gotta turn up the sound

Someone's always yellin' "Turn it down"

[A] Feel like I'm driftin', driftin' from scene to [E7] scene

[B7] I'm wonderin' what in the devil [A] could it all possibly [E7] mean

[E7] Insanity is smashin' up against my soul

You could say I was on anything but a roll

[A] If I had a conscience, well I just might blow my [E7] top

[B7] What would I do with it anyway, [A] maybe take it to the pawn [E7] shop

[E7] My heart's in The Highlands at the break of dawn

By the beautiful lake of the Black Swan

[A] Big white clouds like chariots that swing down [E7] low

Well my [B7] heart's in The Highlands [A] only place left to [E7] go

[E7] I'm in Boston town in some restaurant

I got no idea what I want

Or [A] maybe I do but I'm just really not [E7] sure

[B7] Waitress comes over, [A] nobody in the place but me and [E7] her

[E7] Well it must be a holiday, there's nobody around

She studies me closely as I sit down

She got a [A] pretty face and long white shiny [E7] legs

I said [B7] "Tell me what I want"

She say "You [A] probably want hard boiled [E7] eggs"

[E7] I said "That's right, bring me some"

She says "We ain't got any, you picked the wrong time to come"

Then she says [A] "I know you're an artist, draw a picture of [E7] me"

I said [B7] "I would if I could but [A] I don't do sketches from memo-[E7]-ry"

[E7] Well she says "I'm right here in front of you or haven't you looked"

I say "All right I know but I don't have my drawin' book"

She [A] gives me a napkin, she say "You can do it on [E7] that"

I say [B7] "Yes I could but I [A] don't know where my pencil is [E7] at"

[E7] She pulls one out from behind her ear

She says "Alright now go ahead draw me I'm stayin' right here"

[A] I make a few lines and I show it for her to [E7] see

Well she [B7] takes the napkin and [A] throws it back and says

"That don't look a thing like [E7] me"

[E7] I said "Oh kind miss, it most certainly does"

She say "You must be joking", I said "I wish I was"

She says [A] "You don't read women authors do ya?"

at least that's what I think I hear her [E7] say

Well I say [B7] "How would you know, and [A] what would it matter any-[E7]-way"

[E7] Well she says "Ya just don't seem like ya do", I said "You're way wrong"

She says "Which ones have you read then?", I say "I read Erica Jong"

[A] She goes away for a minute, and I slide out, out of my [E7] chair

[B7] I step outside back to the busy street, [A] but nobody's goin' any-[E7]-where

[E7] Well my heart's in The Highlands with the horses and hounds

Way up in the border country far from the towns

With the [A] twang of the arrow and the snap of the [E7] bow

[B7] My heart's in The Highlands, can't [A] see any other way to [E7] go

[E7] Every day is the same thing, out the door

Feel further away than ever before

[A] Some things in life it just gets too late to [E7] learn

[B7] Well I'm lost somewhere, [A] I must have made a few bad [E7] turns

[E7] I see people in the park, forgettin' their troubles and woes

They're drinkin' and dancin', wearin' bright colored clothes

[A] All the young men with the young women lookin' so [E7] good

[B7] Well I'd trade places with any of 'em, [A] in a minute if I [E7] could

I'm crossin' the street to get away from a mangy dog

Talkin' to myself in a monologue

[A] I think what I need might be a full length leather [E7] coat

[B7] Somebody just asked me [A] if I'm registered to [E7] vote

[E7] The sun is beginnin' to shine on me

But it's not like the sun that used to be

[A] The party's over and there's less and less to [E7] say

[B7] I got new eyes, [A] everything looks far [E7] away

[E7] Well my heart's in The Highlands at the break of day

Over the hills and far away

[A] There's a way to get there, and I'll figure it out some-[E7]-how

[B7] Well I'm already there in my mind [A] and that's good enough for [E7] now
