This is a song I wrote while thinking about that mysterious service ethic that makes some people devote their time to helping
others, in particular those who inspired me to get involved in the veteran community back in the 1980s.
MYSTERY VOICE
Lachlan Irvine
[G] As I was walking down along the way,
I heard a [C] voice calling out to [G] say
Where are you [C] going boy, what are you going to [G] do?
If you got no [D7] plans, here's a plan for [G] you.
[G] It's a long dark night, it's a lonesome road,
Why don't you shine a [C] light, why don't you share a [G] load;
You see somebody [C] stumble, somebody lose their [G] way,
Lend a hand and [D7] lead them to the light of [G] day.
[G] Well, I had to stop, like I turned to stone.
I'd always done my [C] walking down the road a-[G]-lone;
Never gave a [C] thought to any other [G] way,
Till I heard that [D7] voice and what it had to [G] say.
[G] It's a long dark night, it's a lonesome road,
Why don't you shine a [C] light, why don't you share a [G] load;
You see somebody [C] stumble, somebody lose their [G] way,
Lend a hand and [D7] lead them to the light of [G] day.
[G] Now my mind's made up, and the future's bright,
I've got to change my [C] ways, I'm going to do what's [G] right;
That mystery [C] voice has made me [G] see
What I do for [D7] others can make a better [G] me.
[G] It's a long dark night, it's a lonesome road,
Why don't you shine a [C] light, why don't you share a [G] load;
You see somebody [C] stumble, somebody lose their [G] way,
Lend a hand and [D7] lead them to the light of [G] day.
[G] If you're out there walking, you got nothing to fear
If you hear that [C] voice calling to your [G] ear;
If you heed the [C] message, hear what it has to [G] say
We can walk to-[D7]-gether, down the road some [G] day.
[G] It's a long dark night, it's a lonesome road,
Why don't you shine a [C] light, why don't you share a [G] load;
You see somebody [C] stumble, somebody lose their [G] way,
Lend a hand and [D7] lead them to the light of [G] day.
[G] It's a long dark night, it's a lonesome road,
Why don't you shine a [C] light, why don't you share a [G] load;
You see somebody [C] stumble, somebody lose their [G] way,
Lend a hand and [D7] lead them to the light of [G] day.
[G] It's a long dark night, it's a lonesome road,
Why don't you shine a [C] light, why don't you share a [G] load;
You see somebody [C] stumble, somebody lose their [G] way,
Lend a hand and [D7] lead them to the light of [G] day.
