This is one of my most autobiographical songs. My life story condensed into about three and a half minutes.

A STRONG FOUNDATION

Words and music by Lachlan Irvine

[E] When I was just a baby, my mother would sing me to sleep,
With songs of salvation and freedom, and rivers wide and deep;
[A] My father worked on the railway tracks, just like his father before.
A [E] working man's wage was his reward for [E7] six long years of war;
But it's al-[A]-right, yes, it's o-[E]-kay.
If you've [B7] got a strong foundation, [A] I believe you can find the [E] way.

[E] Our family home was a tent, of unbleached calico.
When you start your life at the bottom, there's just one way you've got to go;
I [A] grew up quiet and peaceful, but before my teens were through,
The [E] drums of war that my father heard came [E7] calling for me too;
But it's al-[A]-right, yes, it's o-[E]-kay.
If you've [B7] got a strong foundation, [A] I believe you can find the [E] way.

Well, [E] somehow I got through it, although I was mighty green,
Now I'm stuck with all of those visions of things I've done and seen;
[A] I tried to get my life back, in a world turned upside down,
But I [E] burned my bridges behind me and [E7] started drifting around;
But it's al-[A]-right, yes, it's o-[E]-kay.
If you've [B7] got a strong foundation, [A] I believe you can find the [E] way.

[E] The road has never been easy, I haven't always been smart,
But I always tried to live my life with a true and honest heart;
Now [A] love and peace have found me, and put a smile on my face,
For [E] all the crazy twists and turns that [E7] brought me to this place;
Where it's al-[A]-right, yes, it's o-[E]-kay.
If you've [B7] got a strong foundation, [A] I believe you can find the [E] way.

Yes, If you've [B7] got a strong foundation, [A] I believe you can find the [E] way.
