THE DEAD WOMBAT SONG
Lachlan Irvine's Home Page

A song about roadkill, Aussie style. For those not familiar with the local geography, the King's Highway, which runs from Queanbeyan to Bateman's Bay, is the road that connects residents of the Australian capital, Canberra, with their weekend and holiday destinations on the coast.

THE DEAD WOMBAT SONG

Words and music by Lachlan Irvine

[C]/[G][Em][C]/[D]/[G]/

[G] I was out for a drive with my family,
For a [C] long weekend down by the [G] shore;
When my [C] eyes were unpleasantly [G] opened; [Em]
When [C] out of the [D] window I [G] saw:

[C] 25 dead [G] wombats, From [C] Queanbeyan down to the [G] Bay;
[C] 25 dead [G] wombats, [Em] Lying [C] there by the [D] King's High-[G]-way.

They made a [G] ghastly guard of honour,
As [C] we went speeding [G] past;
There was [C] no time to show them [G] any re-[Em]-spect,
With the [C] traffic moving [D] way too [G] fast.

There were [C] 25 dead [G] wombats, From [C] Queanbeyan down to the [G] Bay;
[C] 25 dead [G] wombats, [Em] Lying [C] there by the [D] King's High-[G]-way.

Of course, it [G] it wasn't only wombats,
In this [C] mournful roadside [G] scene;
There were [C] many other [G] victims [Em]
In this [C] war between [D] nature and ma-[G]-chine.

There were [C] 25 dead [G] wombats, From [C] Queanbeyan down to the [G] Bay;
[C] 25 dead [G] wombats, [Em] Lying [C] there by the [D] King's High-[G]-way.

Now [G] I'm not saying we don't need highways
But [C] maybe we should think about the [G] cost;
[C] To get us to the seaside even [G] faster, [Em]
[C] How many [D] wombats must be [G] lost?

There were [C] 25 dead [G] wombats, From [C] Queanbeyan down to the [G] Bay;
[C] 25 dead [G] wombats, [Em] Lying [C] there by the [D] King's High-[G]-way.

We can [G] find a cure for diseases,
We can [C] send rocket ships out into [G] space;
[C] Surely it shouldn't be be-[G]-yond us [Em]
To [C] make a wombat's [D] life a bit more [G] safe.

There were [C] 25 dead [G] wombats, From [C] Queanbeyan down to the [G] Bay;
[C] 25 dead [G] wombats, [Em] Lying [C] there by the [D] King's High-[G]-way.

There were [C] 25 dead [G] wombats, From [C] Queanbeyan down to the [G] Bay;
[C] 25 dead [G] wombats, [Em] Lying [C] there by the [D] King's High-[G]-way.
