MYSTERY VOICE

Lachlan Irvine

As I was [G] walking down along the way,
I heard a [C] voice calling out to [G] say
Where are you [C] going boy, what are you going to [G] do?
If you got no [D7] plans, here's a plan for [G] you.

It's a long dark [G] night, it's a lonesome road,
Why don't you shine a [C] light, why don't you share a [G] load;
You see somebody [C] stumble, somebody lose their [G] way,
Lend a hand and [D7] lead them to the light of [G] day.

Well, I had to [G] stop, like I turned to stone.
I'd always done my [C] walking down the road a-[G]-lone;
Never gave a [C] thought to any other [G] way,
Till I heard that [D7] voice and what it had to [G] say.

It's a long dark [G] night, it's a lonesome road,
Why don't you shine a [C] light, why don't you share a [G] load;
You see somebody [C] stumble, somebody lose their [G] way,
Lend a hand and [D7] lead them to the light of [G] day.

Now my mind's made [G] up, and the future's bright,
I've got to change my [C] ways, I'm going to do what's [G] right;
That mystery [C] voice has made me [G] see
What I do for [D7] others can make a better [G] me.

It's a long dark [G] night, it's a lonesome road,
Why don't you shine a [C] light, why don't you share a [G] load;
You see somebody [C] stumble, somebody lose their [G] way,
Lend a hand and [D7] lead them to the light of [G] day.

If you're out there [G] walking, you got nothing to fear
If you hear that [C] voice calling to your [G] ear;
If you heed the [C] message, hear what it has to [G] say
We can walk to-[D7]-gether, down the road some [G] day.

It's a long dark [G] night, it's a lonesome road,
Why don't you shine a [C] light, why don't you share a [G] load;
You see somebody [C] stumble, somebody lose their [G] way,
Lend a hand and [D7] lead them to the light of [G] day.

Repeat chorus X 2

I started out wanting to write a song that would be a tribute to the members of the veteran community who inspired me to get involved with their selfless devotion to helping others. Instead, as often happens, the song went in a different direction, becoming a more general tribute to the service ethic.
