AGAINST THE WALL

Words and music by Lachlan Irvine

[G]/[Bm]/[Em]/[C][G]/

In my [G] early childhood home, [Bm] there was no front door;
The [Em] roof was made of canvas and the [C] red dirt was our [G] floor. /
[G] When you grow up poor, just as [Bm] sure as you learn to crawl,
[Em] Soon you'll learn what life is like with your [C] back against the [G] wall.
[G] Back against the wall, [Bm] back against the wall;
[Em] Soon you'll learn what life is like with your [C] back against the [G] wall.

When [G] schooling days were done, I [Bm] left home that same day;
I [Em] already had a job and couldn't [C] wait to earn my [G] pay. /
[G] I was young and green and maybe [Bm] heading for a fall,
But I [Em] had to make my own way with my [C] back against the [G] wall.
[G] Back against the wall, [Bm] back against the wall,
I [Em] had to make my own way with my [C] back against the [G] wall.

I [G] remember in the summer of love, I was [Bm] carrying a gun;
There was [Em] sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll, and [C] I was getting [G] none. /
[G] Fighting for my life while other [Bm] kids were having a ball,
I [Em] had to do my duty with my [C] back against the [G] wall.
[G] Back against the wall, [Bm] back against the wall,
I [Em] had to do my duty with my [C] back against the [G] wall.

On [G] many a lonesome road, [Bm] I wandered far and wide,
[Em] Maybe there'd be greener grass [C] on the other [G] side. /
[G] Bouncing around the world [Bm] like an old pinball,
Trying to [Em] find the road less travelled with my [C] back against the [G] wall.
[G] Back against the wall, [Bm] back against the wall,
Trying to [Em] find the road less travelled with my [C] back against the [G] wall.

Some [G] people just like me, were [Bm] fighting against a lie,
I [Em] had to join their struggle, 'cause I [C] couldn't walk on [G] by. /
They gave a [G] purpose to my life, all for [Bm] one and one for all,
Working [Em] for the good of others with their [C] backs against the [G] wall.
[G] Backs against the wall, [Bm] backs against the wall,
Working [Em] for the good of others with their [C] backs against the [G] wall.

[G] Looking back today to [Bm] where I've been back then,
I [Em] reckon if I had the chance I'd do [C] most of it a-[G]-gain. /
I [G] hope that I can say when I [Bm] take my curtain call:
I [Em] did the best that I could do with my [C] back against [G] the wall.
[G] Back against the wall, [Bm] back against the wall,
I [Em] did the best that I could do with my [C] back against [G] the wall.
[G] Back against the wall, [Bm] back against the wall,
I [Em] did the best that I could do with my [C] back against [G] the wall.

[G]/[Bm]/[Em]/[C][G]

This is an autobiographical song, the 5th verse being a reference to my activism in the veteran community, which began with the Agent Orange struggle in the 1980s. To hear my home-made recording of this song, go to:
